Latitude
Until Feb 11 Fieldgate Gallery, 14 Fieldgate Street, E1 1ES
London is the second stop for this group show which, having premiered in Minneapolis, will travel to New York later in the year. Ten artists from each city are involved, the curators’ intention being for them to explore ideas of interconnectedness and respond to each other’s work as the exhibition progresses. Either by accident or design, a dose of cross-pollination seems already to have occurred. Governing much of the work is a grunge-pop aesthetic – the international language of cool disaffection – illustrated by Andy Hsu's installation of pound shop treasure. Quasi-diagrammatic doodling is witnessed in wallpieces by Liz Miller and Diann Bauer, and in Ryan Chamberlain’s small paintings, proving the global influence of Julie Mehretu, Beatriz Milhazes and Franz Ackermann.
Singing a tuneless, stentorian version of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Have Nothing’, Sarah Baker from London is outwitted by New Yorker Emily Lutzker performing ‘My Heroes, The Clash’, part of her ‘Un-Karaoke’ project in which she ‘becomes’ a musical icon from each city. The most lasting impression comes from ‘Ghost retransplantation’ by Diana Shpungin, also from New York. Accompanied by a theremin soundtrack, a flickering video projection shows the façade of an old English pub said to be haunted by two of Jack the Ripper’s victims. The film wasn’t made in the East End, however, but in the States;in 1996 the building was shipped to the Florida and Shpungin has used this opportunity to repatriate, and hopefully placate, the unhappy spirits.

Latitude London Art Exhibition
View an evolving travelling art event at the Latitude London art
exhibition.
See the work of emerging London artists at the Latitude London
art exhibition, a travelling exhibit that evolves as it moves from city
to city. Made up of an equal number of artists from London, New
York and Minneapolis, Latitude shows how the artists’
geographical locations are a big influence in their work.
Connected artists
Latitude aims to bring together artists from all across the world by
connecting them through their geographic differences. Since the
exhibit evolves over time, it gives the artists an opportunity to
respond to each other’s work, thereby changing their own styles.
The three cities included are major art hubs, which means that
the artists are influenced by their locations in different ways.
A non-movement movement
The art world has a tendency to compartmentalise different styles
into specific movements, but with technology changing constantly
artists are being exposed to much broader work. The Latitude
London art exhibition hopes to leave specifications behind and
take a more general look at what influences artists.
Latitude in London
London is the second stop for the traveling show, which was
previously seen in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Soap Factory in
2006, in the form of a show called 8x8x8. Its London home is at
the Fieldgate Gallery in East London. The show will head to New
York City later in 2007, and the New Yorkers will be certain to put
their own spin on things.

The artists featured in the Latitude London art exhibition include
Sarah Baker, Diann Bauer, Isha Bøhling, Doug Fishbone, Matt
Franks, Neil Hamon, Andy Hsu, Mandy Lee Jandrell, Sharone
